Eric Seward

Eric Seward is an associate director and consultant at Rights and Equality West Midlands. Previously, he worked for thirty years as director of the Commission for Racial Equality’s northern region.  He has unrivalled knowledge and experience of the operation of the Race Relations Act, the local priorities of race relations, electoral law, local government involvement in equality and promotion, and the work of voluntary sector race equality organisations.

Eric has made an important contribution to many Race Equality West Midlands projects but is especially knowledgeable about ethnic residential segregation and the threat to race relations from fascist far-right political parties.

He is the author of:

  • Confronting the racist activities of political parties.  A guide for local authorities (see our publications: RED 18)

  • Confronting the racist activities of political parties.  A guide for voluntary and community organisations (see our publications: RED 11).

  • What happened to far-right political parties in the West Midlands.  An analysis of the 2005 General Election results (see our publications: RED 13).

  • The performance of far-right political parties in the May 2006 local council elections (see our publications: RED 19).

  • The performance of far-right political parties in the May 2007 local council elections (see our publications RED 22).

  • Ethnic residential, and school segregation.  A study of twenty-five local authority areas (see our publications RED 21) (This Race Equality Digest (RED 21) is on ethnic residential segregation in the major towns and cities in England, Scotland and Wales, and has contributed to the ‘sleepwalking to segregation’ debate.)
