Freda Edwards
Freda Edwards serves as Rights and Equality West
Midlands Officer, Events and Administration. She
joined the organisation in September 2005, as an
assistant to the CEO and Deputy CEO, Training and
Development, eventually taking over the organisation
of REWM’s seminar series run jointly with the
University of Birmingham’s Centre for the Study of
Ethnicity and Culture. She is now largely
responsible for the word processing, publication and
dissemination of REWM’s prestigious Rights and
Equality Digests and the Rights and Equality
Practitioner book series. |
Among her
other duties, she provides secretarial support to the
Federation of Race Equality Councils, the West Midlands
Local Authority Network, and the West Midlands Race Equality
Forum.
Before
joining Rights and Equality West Midlands, Freda qualified
as a teaching assistant, with a dual purpose of pursuing her
love of nurturing the young and encouraging her own children
to recognise the importance of education for realising their
true potential. Her interest in improving minority ethnic
educational performance led her to volunteer to serve on the
Commission for Race Equality’s regional Race Equality
Education Network. She is also a member of the
Wolverhampton Raising Achievements Steering Group Programme
aimed particularly at improving the achievements of
black-Caribbean boys by involving parents more closely in
their children’s education.
A
creative, sensitive and imaginative member of the team, she
has, on sheer merit, been given responsibility for art and
design work associated with our publications, display work,
management of social events, launches, and front-of-house
activities. We want her to develop further her expertise in
design. Since 1989, she has studied and practised as an
interior designer and hopes shortly to progress onto a BA (Hons)
in Design.
