Spartaca Chevannes-Reeves
LLB(Hons), MSc.
Spartaca was born in Wolverhampton, West Midlands.
Supporting her parents’ project and campaigns,
Spartaca assisted with the Mixed Race Support
Association and was involved in rallying support
against far-right parties among the local
communities of Wolverhampton. |
After
successfully achieving A-levels, Spartaca took up a place at
Lancaster University, where she read Law. Her studies, in
particular Human Rights and International Law, bolstered her
interest in justice and equality. On completion of her
course, and after much consideration, she chose not to
pursue a career as a lawyer. Instead, she worked in a
temporary job, saved her money and went backpacking for
three months to South East Asia, Australia and New Zealand.
In 2003,
Spartaca began working for West Mercia Local Criminal
Justice Board as Community and Diversity Officer. Spartaca
was involved in a range of projects, including establishing
the Race Forum, researching local demographic information,
advising on the implementation of anti-discrimination
legislation duties, supporting and developing agencies’ LGBT
and black staff support groups and organising conferences.
She spent part of her time based with the Diversity Team at
West Mercia Police Headquarters, Hindlip, before moving to
the Local Criminal Justice Board office, based with the
Crown Prosecution Service in Droitwich Spa.
Spartaca
returned to University in 2005, where she gained an MSc in
Poverty Reduction and International Development Management,
at the University of Birmingham. As part of her course, she
spent six weeks in South Africa assessing the effect on
racial reconciliation of the Truth and Reconciliation
Commission. She continued to undertake consultancy work,
including work with Race Equality West Midlands, and a
project with West Mercia Probation Service about the
experiences of BME offenders. She graduated in December
2006. Mixed race herself, she has a research interest in
mixed-race issues, especially those of young people.
Spartaca
is currently working as Diversity Advisor with Oxfam, an
international NGO, based in Oxford. She wrote RED 7
Gypsy and Traveller Communities in the West Midlands Region
(see our publications).
