West
Midlands Local Authority Equality Network
The terms
of reference of the West Midlands Local Authority Equality
Network are:
-
To
provide an opportunity for designated officers of local
authorities to share and develop good practice in the
exercise of the positive duty to promote race, gender,
disability and other equalities, with a view to
improving authorities’ equality policy and performance.
-
To
influence the type of service and support available from
the Commission for Racial Equality, Equal Opportunities
Commission, Disability Rights Commission and any
successor body, such as the Equality and Human Rights
Commission, to assist local authorities in fulfilling
their duties under the various acts relating to
eliminating discrimination and promote equality of
opportunity in employment and service provision.

To
develop authorities’ performance in relation to the
Equalities Standard for Local Government and to
contribute to a national framework of performance
management and measuring of equalities.

To
encourage the development of a mutual support network to
help local authorities in the region in implementing and
reviewing the equality schemes, eliminating
institutional discrimination, promoting equality and
community cohesion, and improving public services
generally.

To
improve channel of communications between the Equality
and Human Rights Commission, other national bodies for
promoting equality, Government Office for the West
Midlands, other relevant regional agencies, and local
government.

To
assist in driving forward race equality and community
cohesion initiatives and other government policy related
to equalities.

Membership includes equality and diversity officers from
the 38 local authorities across the West Midlands region
together with the representatives of

Government Office for the West Midlands.

Advantage West Midlands.
-
West
Midlands Regional Assembly.
-
The
Local Government Association.
-
Equality and Human Rights Commission.
-
Race
Equality West Midlands.
-
Other designated regional voluntary bodies, promoting
equalities.
-
The
group aims to attract attendance from all city,
metropolitan borough, county council, unitary authority,
and districts councils in the West Midlands region.
The Local
Authority Equality Network meets approximately four times a
year hosted on each occasions at a different local authority
location.
