Topic 1
Ethnic Monitoring
What is it, what does it contribute, and for what purpose?
As Britain becomes less and less of a mono-cultural society, structures and institutions have to move in the same direction with the tide and times. The diversity which Britain now boasts, must radiate through all aspects of the society. Ethnic monitoring is one way of measuring how far diversity is reflected at different levels in the workplace and also in service delivery in such areas as health, education and housing.
Where there is proportionate imbalance in some areas, such as criminal justice, the reasons must be uncovered to enable action to be taken to bring about justice and equality. Ethnic monitoring can give a snap-shot view of the status quo, and help decision-makers to make necessary adjustments.
However, there is suspicion in some quarters about the true reason and purpose of ethnic monitoring. Some think there is something sinister about it: Big Brother spy network.

Multiculturalism
What is Multiculturalism?
Does it simply mean a state in which people of different cultures – diverse peoples – occupy the same geographical space at a particular time?
Does it mean the inter-mixing of the different peoples and their cultures so that people mix and mingle freely, sliding in and out of different cultural behaviours smoothly and seamlessly?
Does it mean that the diversity of race, beliefs, values and associated practices are admired, respected, appreciated and valued, even if not shared?
Does multiculturalism mean that all honourable members of society should have access to any public facility irrespective of gender, age, colour, race, religion and belief?
Does it mean different things for different social institutions e.g. education, the arts, sport, health, employment and housing?
