Seminar Series/Wednesday 16 November 2005
Joy Warmington approached the topic in a very thought-stimulating way and a lively post-lecture discussion resulted. The concept of multiculturalism was examined, and the question of whether its application contributed to a cohesive society or highlighted divisions was raised. Joy felt that an effective strategy for the Second City could only be developed through interaction between committed and knowledgeable leaders and members of the community, whose collaborative effort would have meaningful and implementable outcomes.
She talked about contradictory policies which on the one hand aim to reduce ‘difference’ and on the other are superintended on differences of religion and faith and cultural attributes. She used Behzti, an Asian drama production, to illustrate how freedom of expression coupled with an insistence on respect for religious belief and practice, can lead to conflict. The implications for multiculturalism of the July 7 London bombings and the October Lozells riots were also considered.
Implicit in Joy’s presentation was that b:RAP felt the whole concept of multiculturalism needed to be revisited and updated and the way forward given careful thought.
There is no doubt that all participants would have returned to their respective locations with much to think about. They would have been forced to re-think their understanding of multiculturalism, and hopefully think how it could be applied to encourage respect, appreciation and better understanding of our cultural diversity.
